How Melbourne Providers Actually Price a Job
Three pricing models operate in this market, and knowing which one you are dealing with explains most quote variance.
Hourly-rate workshops. Small FDM and resin shops price by machine hour, roughly A$4–A$10 per hour at the hobbyist end, A$30–A$150 per hour for supervised industrial machines. Simple and cheap for basic parts; the number tells you nothing about the finished part until the print is off the bed.
Instant-quote bureaus. Automated platforms price on bounding-box volume and material and return a number in under a minute. Genuinely convenient. The limitation is that the algorithm cannot see that a wall is too thin to survive depowdering, that a tolerance will not hold in that orientation, or that a cheaper process would serve the application better.
Engineer-reviewed quoting. A person opens the file, checks manufacturability, and quotes. Slower Zeal returns quotes within 24 hours, but in our experience, the review finds savings larger than the price difference more often than not. The most common single finding is over-specification: a part quoted for SLS that FDM nylon would have handled.

- Post-processing. Support removal, sanding, washing and curing, dyeing, painting, vapour smoothing. On high-finish batch work this reaches 30–50% of total job cost.
- Quality control. Inspection, dimensional verification, documentation where required.
- Failure risk. Every serious provider prices the reality that not every build succeeds first time.
Why One-off Parts Cost So Much More Per Unit
Setup, file prep, machine preparation and inspection are largely fixed. Print one part and you carry all of them; print fifty and you spread them.
A single SLS nylon housing might quote at A$400–A$600. The same part in a run of 50 typically falls to A$150–A$200 each, a 60%+ reduction because the build chamber packs efficiently and setup is amortised across the run.
This is the most reliable cost lever available. If you know you will need the part again, order the quantity now.
Is there a minimum order in Melbourne?

- Right-size the technology. Say “functional prototype”, not “presentation model”, at the quoting stage. Over-specification is the most common avoidable cost we see.
- Hollow non-structural parts. A solid ABS housing uses 3–4× the material of the same part hollowed to 2 mm walls.
- Design out supports. Overhangs beyond 45°, chamfers, self-supporting geometry- these cut material, print time and finishing labour simultaneously. Small changes routinely reduce post-processing cost by 30–50%.
- Loosen tolerances where you can. ±0.1 mm takes far less machine time and inspection than ±0.05 mm. Mark critical dimensions explicitly; leave the rest open.
- Set up a standing account. Regular order books unlock volume pricing and net terms, and remove per-job administration.
When 3D Printing Is not The Cheapest Option
We would rather tell you this before you send the file than after you get the quote.
- Simple prismatic metal parts in small quantities are usually cheaper CNC machined than printed. If it can be milled from bar stock in a couple of setups, mill it.
- Volumes above roughly 500–1,000 identical parts generally favour injection moulding once tooling is amortised. We run injection moulding too, and we will say so when the crossover point has passed.
- Very small one-off hobby prints- a single figurine or a phone stand- are better served by a local hobbyist workshop charging by the hour. Our cost base is built for engineering work, and it would not be honest to pretend otherwise.
- Parts that need certified material traceability carry documentation costs that can exceed the part price. Worth confirming whether you genuinely need it.
